Lizard Point Golf Estate
This Landmark Development on the Vaal Dam will be one of the biggest leisure developments in South Africa situated on 700 hectares of land. It will consist of over 2700 residential units, a boutique hotel, retail and commercial space, two golf courses (links and parklands), a marina and waterfront, holiday club, 4 kilometres of water frontage and much more.
This development has been offered to members of the public since April 2005, and is still under development. The links course broke ground in 2006 and should be playable by third quarter of 2007. The parklands course should be playable by third quarter of 2009.
The estate will feature both a links and a parklands golf course. Although the links course will be an inland links it will be created to resemble a seaside links. The design will take the Free State’s natural veld topography into account with magnificent views.
The mounding on and around the fairways and semi-rough will direct views in the playing direction, which in turn, will screen the residential areas from the course.
As with a seaside links, the prevailing wind will play a major role in club selection during play.
Greens will be constructed to the modified USGA specifications and will be planted with a mixture of SR1120 Brighton and L93 Bent varieties.
Fairways and surrounds will be shaped with a variety of mounds and cross drainage with a combination of pot bunkers or undulating links-style bunkers. The fairways will be planted with evergreen fescue into the second cut and Cynodon Dactylon in the semi-rough. The remaining areas will be planted with a variety of veldgrass species such as Rhodes grass, Smuts finger, Cynodon Dactylon and two Tef grass varieties.
Lakes and streams will form water hazards.
Academy with driving range and practice tee with seven target greens, practice bunkers, putting green and chipping green.
The links course is designed as two loops of nine holes playing as a par-72 with a total length of over 7100m.
A minimum of five tees will be constructed on each fairway, which will provide a greater variety of play and which will be suitable to set up for a major championship or normal leisure golf.
As the course is due to be constructed, the rating has not yet been set.
The links course will be managed by IMG with a strong influence from Retief Goosen. Course policy is still to be set.
The course difficulty will be announced when the course is complete.

The old style charm links course will feature an architecturally appropriate clubhouse with pro-shop, ablution for both genders and a restaurant. The parklands course will be attached to the entire country club including facilities for squash, tennis, and swimming, a full pub, restaurant, Pro shop and child care facility being amongst the most sought after.
Each golf course will feature its own distinctly different clubhouse. The links course clubhouse will be architecturally appropriate for the old style charm the course itself reflects.
Whilst being a fully featured clubhouse, it will focus entirely on golf. The parklands course clubhouse will be significantly larger, and will also be the centre of activity for the entire country club. It will house shops, club facilities, bars and restaurants and will be the central hub of the resort.
